When I was younger, I found that I had a lot of free time. I liked to spend this time playing video games. Lots and lots of video games. I especially took interest in MMORPGs, or Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games, because I could get my friends to join and explore worlds and build strong characters together. These games below are my top three games that defined my childhood.
Pirates of the Caribbean Online After watching Jack Sparrow go through outstanding adventures, who wouldn’t want to follow in his footsteps? POTCO allowed you and your friends to become swashbucklers who would plunder the seas for riches, allowing you to buy fancier ships, guns, and more. Disney took down the game in 2013, but loyal fans have rebuilt the game from the ground up and plan to release it this Tuesday. Toontown Toontown let you explore a cartoon-inspired world, filled with Mickey Mouse characters to interact with. The perfect game for young children, you played as cartoon animals trying to defeat the evil cog machines trying to steal the fun from the world. Simple turn-based combat led to endless fun to be had for all! Runescape Runescape without a doubt stands as one of the greatest MMO’s ever created. An entire medieval-fantasy world is ready for you to discover, hiding secret treasure, colossal enemies, and interesting characters. With controls and gameplay as simple as it can get, anyone can pick up this game and begin to invest way too much time into it. These games are just a few of the many endless worlds video games have to offer. If you are looking to relive childhood magic, these games might be the perfect fit for you. Riding in a hot air balloon has always been a dream of mine. To float through the sky and have such a peaceful view of God’s beautiful creation intrigues me. Viewing all of this from a totally different perspective than what I am used to would be an amazing sight to see. 2. Visit all 50 States I love traveling and would love to be able to visit all 50 states. So far, I have visited 16 of the states and have loved every stop that I have made in them. There are just so many things to see here in the United States and how different each state is. 3. Go Snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef Another dream of mine would be to travel to Australia to view the vivid colors and creatures of the Great Barrier Reef. Being able to snorkel and see this sight up close and personal would be a phenomenal sight. It is a reef like no other in the world. Jumping into the unknown deep waters is a thrill I am ready to face before this creation disappears. 4. Go swimming with pigs on Big Major Cay Island This would be mixing two of my favorite things, pigs and the beach. The idea of spending the day in the sun on the beach with cute friendly pigs is a dream come true. I can only imagine swimming side by side with one of my favorite creatures. Author: My name is Meredith McCreary, I am 16 years old and a junior in high school. I have one older sister. I would much rather be on the golf course than be at school. The golf course has been my second home for the past 7 years. Above is a list of activities that I want to accomplish in my life. For some people, painting a picture, playing an instrument, or practice for a play is part of their everyday life. But there are also people who can’t draw a straight line, have never touched an instrument, or even been on a stage in their lives. Everyone has different interests and passions, but when schools threaten to take away programs such as the arts, more than just interests are put in danger. Long before humans were writing, building skyscrapers, or taking tests, we were dancing, singing, and creating art. There has been evidence found that, as far back as 100,000 years, humans were painting. The oldest evidence of humans creating music, carved flutes, was found in European caves, from over 35,000 years ago. For centuries, mankind has been creating and celebrating the arts, and it has been vital to our development. Art education brings people together and offers a way of communication that is above race, language, age, and ability. The arts teach people that problems can be solved multiple ways and there are also many ways to see the world. There have been many studies done on the benefits of keeping the arts in schools and encouraging student to take part in them. For example, a study done by Obama’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, the first federal study of arts education in over a decade, shows that students’ motivation, engagement, attendance, focused attention, problem-solving, critical and creative thinking, social interacts, teamwork, and self-confidence increase. Also, their standardized test scores, especially in reading and mathematics, increase. When exposed to the arts, young people become more tolerant and empathetic. Art also teaches students to take time and be more careful and thoughtful in how they observe the world. There are many benefits to art and art education. It is understandable that there are people that don’t necessarily like art, music, drama, dance, etc., but it can still benefit them, their social skills, and school work. It is part of our human nature to be creative, and being creative greatly benefits students’ education. The reason for this is because there haven’t been many people in this world that have climb Mt Everest. That would be an amazing experience as well. Just imagine getting to the summit after a 2 month climb. Knowing you are on top of the world. This climb would also get you in the best shape of your life. Then when you apply for a job and they ask what your best achievements are you can put I climbed Mt Everest. Then there is no way that you would be denied the job. Now my personal goal for the year is I want to get the school shutout record in soccer. I am at 14 or 15 I’m not really sure but the record is 20. If I stay on the tracks the way it has been going I should be able to get recorded by the end of my senior year. I also want to be an all-conference player my junior and senior year in soccer. So those are some of my goals for the year and something that I want to do that is on my bucket list. Author: Nate Slavin
Above are my top ten favorite animated Disney movies. This was a very hard list to make because I have younger siblings and little cousins that I babysit all the time, so I watch a lot of these movies. However, number one was an easy pick: The Lion King. This is hands down my favorite Disney movie and, it always will be. Number two is Aladdin followed by The Little Mermaid. Both are the old fashioned classical Disney movies that every child should have seen growing up. Coming in forth is Hercules due to the adorable characters and twist on some Greek and Roman Mythology. Number five goes to Finding Nemo, because it never gets annoying even after you have watched it a million times, like I have. The next two are some more modern ones, Moana and Finding Dory. These come in sixth and seventh because the soundtrack is amazing is Moana and, who doesn’t love a fish that, “Just keeps swimming.” Coming in eighth is Big Hero 6 due to all the hilarious characters, and great message. Finally, the last two, coming in ninth and tenth are Frozen and Zootopia. Both of these movies I love, but having watched them as many times as I have, they're starting to get old pretty fast. Monica Gerstbauer is a junior at Batesville High School. She plays volleyball and is planning on going to college and going into the medical field. iTraveling, exploring, adventuring; everyone loves it correct? Correct. So, here are a few ideas if you are bored on a weeknight or happen to be staying in Batesville. I believe these are the tops things to see or do. Batesville, Indiana, population of approximately 6600. Nobody knows we exist, when trying to describe where we live, we end up just saying half-way between Indianapolis and Cincinnati. Instead of miles of shopping centers and restaurants, we have miles of corn fields and backroads. Despite these differences, we do have some pretty “interesting” things that may intrigue you if you are a local, or you are just rolling through on your way to your destination. Coffee is pretty good, at least I think so, and we happen to have the best coffee shop around. Amack’s Well has the best atmosphere in Batesville. The workers there are all absolutely amazing. Their personalities and service, will always please you. Amack’s is full of games to play with your friends, and the back wall is usually full of art work from our locals. Overall, I would rate it a ten out of ten. The good ole’ outdoors, I mean who doesn’t love bugs and trees… I mean lots of bugs. If you’re a fan, you do you buddy, I will not judge. If you happen to be a fan, we have, surprise, woods dedicated to you! Brum Woods offers a series of trails in its “large woods”, as well as a simple trail in its “small woods.” These trails wood be fun, to some, to run/walk through not only by yourself, but with friends. If you happen to live in small town Batesville and find yourself bored on a Friday night, come on out to one of the Dog’s football games. Everyone will be there! The Friday night lights definitely bring in the largest crowd around here. We all enjoy cheering on our Dog’s. Last and most likely least, when in Batesville you must watch a sunset/take a picture from an empty field. I can assure you, it will be one of the best things you will do in Batesville. Get a couple of friends, a blanket or two, and drive out in the country. Once you find an open, empty field, lay down your blanket and just watch the sunset. Indiana sunsets are the best. Author: Haley Diaz Haley Diaz is a cheerleader at Batesville High School. She plans to attend college next year and become a nurse practioner. We all love plastic baggies, right? So, I’d say it’s about time to talk about our favorite things to put in them. Let’s get right into it. 1. Chips- We all love a good after school snack of Lays or Doritos, and we can always rely on a good ‘ol plastic bag to seal in that freshness. 2. PB&J- Such a messy sandwich needs a good container that won’t get jelly everywhere. The plastic bag will allow the contents to get on the inside, and then you can throw the messy bag away with minimal cleanup after removing the sandwich. Perfect. 3. Ice- Create your own makeshift ice pack by putting ice cubes in a plastic baggie. Convenient. 4. Phone- If you decide to go kayaking, but you don’t decide to get a waterproof case, bringing a plastic bag for your phone may be the best idea you’ve ever had. Ever. 5. Apple Slices- If you cut up too many apple slices and you don’t want those gross brown ones, you should totally put them in a plastic baggie to preserve freshness. 6. Trail Mix- Plastic baggies make it so easy to just dump all the separate ingredients into one bag and then shake it up for insta-trailmix. 7. Quarters- When Monday night comes around and it’s time for poker night with the boys, you’re going to need a good way to access your quarters and plastic baggies are just the way to do so. 8. Candy- You can make your own assorted candy mix in a plastic baggie, you can even have them unwrapped and ready to go so you can save time. Look at all this time you’re saving. 9. A Fish- If you have no bowl, a goldfish could find a nice cozy home in a Ziploc bag if needed (Please only use as a last resort). 10. Board Game Pieces- When you are playing monopoly and someone opens the box too fast, you’re bound to have some money fly out. Putting all loose contents into a bag will solve this problem. Now that you have the top ten list of plastic bag contents, it’s up to you how you use it. Author: Ridge Douglas Ridge Douglas is a senior at Batesville High School.
