I’ve struggled with anxiety my entire life. Ever since I was young, I’d worry about things that were considered “little” to the majority of my friends. I couldn’t leave my mom’s side, I didn’t want to walk into places where people could see me, and I basically just wanted to live my life as simply as possible. Although many, many things contributed to my anxiety, it was in 7th grade that I discovered one of the biggest contributors. Growing up, I always knew I was different from my friends. I knew something was off, you could say. I felt awkward in social settings, like I had to hide something. In 7th grade, I finally sat myself down and admitted it- I’m gay. I clearly remember the night I came to terms with my sexuality. I just stared at the opposite side of my couch, unable to sleep, scared to death. It consumed every thought I had for a solid 3 months. My anxiety grew worse within that amount of time. How would I tell my family? What would people think? I didn’t know what to do, and I felt completely alone. I decided to take things one step at time and tell somebody I trusted- my sister. It took me 15 minutes to rack up the courage and tell her. Finally, I said it. “Grace, I think I’m gay.” I’ll never forget how Grace responded with a simple, “I’ve known since you were five.” From that day, it was a gradual process of coming to terms with myself. I had a few rough experiences when coming out, but the majority of my experience was an overflow of love from the people around me.
If somebody would’ve told me 2 years ago that I’d be writing this blog post for anyone to see, I’d think they were crazy. But over the past 4 years, I’ve slowly learned to be proud and confident in my identity. Today, I can confidently say a weight has been lifted off of my shoulders. To anyone reading this who is struggling with a similar situation, I want you to remember these things: it WILL get better, you ARE loved, and asking for help is OKAY. Hi. I’m Sally Heppner and I’m a junior at BHS. I love makeup, fashion, BHS set crew (shout-out), and crying over videos of dogs. I hope to pursue a career in theatre arts makeup in the future.

Today I am going to talk to you about something that is so extremely important to everyone. I
believe if you possess this one thing; no matter your social status, wealth, and living circumstances, I believe that you will truly live a good life. This one thing is already within in us and completely free! I know you might be wondering what this one thing is aren’t you? It is happiness. "Happiness, it turns out, is not something we go after. It’s something already within us. We just need to clear up some clutter to find it.” I know it’s not as easy as it sounds; Just be happy, right? Sometimes you just can’t shy away from normal human emotions like sadness, jealousy, insecurities, and shame, but there are many ways in which you can greatly change your perspective. 1. Let go of trying to control everything The only thing that is really in our control is attitude and our reactions. Like I said before there is really no way of controlling other emotions. Once we accept that we can always find happiness no matter how things turn out. This can be really hard for most people and is not easy. 2. Stop trying to please everyone This has become way more relevant in today’s society thanks to social media. We care way to much about what others think and solely post things, say things, and act a certain way just to please people and get them to like who we “are”. You will not find happiness in anyone but yourself. 3. Let go of entitlement and feeling sorry for yourself Many times when bad things happen to them they ask “why me?” We should start replacing it with “why not me?” Why should we think we are better than everyone else and don’t deserve the pain and sorrow? 4. Let go of negativity Way too many times we do not look at the glass half full, but half empty. Look at what’s good and be grateful. If theres also negative (toxic) people in our lives, we have to stop and think is being there friend really worth the distress they put on our lives? Your attitude is very significant. 5. Look at things with beauty Lastly, this one is very important. Always look at things with beauty. Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes you just have to dig deep and find out how this situation can be beneficial for you. Even walking down the sidewalk try to look at things you have never noticed before and you will be astonished by how beautiful things actually are. Perception is EVERYTHING I am an intelligent person with an open-mind. I like to play baseball, football, hang out with the brothers, and do exciting things. Even though I like to hang out with my friends I also enjoy chilling by myself. I am very nostalgic and like the aesthetics and the ways of life in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and also 90s. I don’t like to conform to social norms, but start my own thing. I’ve been trying to improve my life recently in ways that I can control, even though it is hard at times. It was my freshman year of high school, and I was in Spanish class. Spanish class was usually
very chill and very fun in my opinion. I had a lot of good friends and we all gelled well with the teacher. Everything was always perfect, until one day we got new seats and I knew that the usually laidback classroom would transform into something wild. I am usually a calm and collected student, but given the right company I can be hard to control. I was sat by two of my friends, Timoteo and Nacho (my Spanish name was Alfredo), and I knew we could be crazy together. Form that day on, every class just became a madhouse. We were drawing all over desks, throwing things at people, and just being obnoxious in general. At first, it was still controlled chaos until one particular day we were extra loud and talkative. Our teacher finally got us to be quiet and the entire class falls silent. She was scolding us for not being respectful, talking too much, and ruining the desks, when in that silence TImoteo let out what seemed to be the loudest fart ever. The entire class lost it and went berserk with laughter. In the midst of all this I hear the teacher yell “Alfredo”. I cannot believe that she thought it was me. Shortly after she yelled at me she said, “Alfredo, Timoteo, Nacho, go to the hallway now”. As soon as we get out to the hallway Timoteo explains that he just had to fart at the wrong time. Our teacher began uncontrollably laughing about it with us. She had thought that I just made a fart noise. After the laughing was over she proceeded to tell us that if we continued our bad behavior she would call our parents and that we would no longer be sitting together. That was arguably the best time I have ever had in a class in my entire life. Life is all about listening and learning, but you cannot forget to have fun along the way. Even our Spanish teacher had fun in that crazy class. Enjoy the little things, do not be too reckless, and don’t play it too safe. About the Author: My name is Cooper Williams and I am a senior at BHS. I spend a lot of time hanging with my friends and eating at Waffle House. I will be attending IUPUI next fall and studying finance at the Kelley School of Business. 1. The first thing that I like to do when I’m bored is take a nap. It is just something to pass
time and it takes no effort. 2. The second thing that I like to do when I’m bored is playing Xbox. There is nothing better than whooping my brothers at Xbox. It also passes time by fast because we are having fun. 3. The next thing that I like to do when I am bored is sit down and watch tv because it is relaxing. You don’t have to do anything but sit and watch. 4. The fourth thing that I like to do when I am bored is play ping pond with my older brother. It so fun when we get into those point when we both are hitting the ball back and forth for a long time. 5. The next thing to do when I am bored is to go fishing. It’s fun when we go out on a hot day and catch a lot of fish. It’s also a time to joke around with each other. 6. The sixth thing that I like to do when I’m bored is go for a drive and listen to music. It is a time to relax and think about things. 7. The seventh thing that I like to when I’m bored is toss a ball with my brother. It could be a baseball or a football and it would still pass time. 8. The next thing that I like to do when I’m bored is go swimming. Swimming is a good way to get physical activity in and it is a fun thing to do when you have nothing else to do. 9. The ninth thing that I like to do when I am bored is play on my phone. Playing on my phone can pass the time if I’m not doing anything because it keeps me occupied. 10. The final thing that I like to do when I’m bored is just nothing. I couldn’t really think of anything besides doing nothing. When you are doing nothing, it gives you times to just think. When my younger brother Tanner was about three he was gifted two dogs, unfair I
know, but I’m over it. There was a black puppy we named Thunder and a golden puppy we named Beowulf (pronounced bae-wolf). I don’t remember how many years we owned both of the dogs, but a few years later Thunder had either died or gone missing. I am too young to remember. But, we still have Beowulf... kind of. One of our neighbors is an old lady who adored Beowulf and my cousins dog Alex. They would both go over to her house all of the time and she would feed them a better meal than I would eat. The most ironic part about this is that she is a vegetarian. She didn’t really have meat in her house because she didn’t eat it. But, she loved these dogs so much that she would go to the store and stock her fridge with tons of meat. She gets 80% lean ground beef, nothing less nothing more, steaks, country club hamburgers (which were like $12 dollars a burger, and bacon. She would then fix this meat with cottage cheese and dog food. They would be fed the leftovers of pizza and any other meal she had. Needless to say, Beowulf doesn’t live with us anymore because he got treated like a peasant at our house compared to hers. To this day he still gets better meals than I do and because she is too old to go grocery shopping herself it is up to my brothers and I to go shopping at Kroger’s every week and restock her fridge for our dog. It’s okay though because if we never have any food at our house I know where to go. What I want everyone to take away from this is: The best way to move up in life is to become a cute dog.
